JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University softball team were swept in the Gulf South Conference Series with Mississippi College over the weekend.
In the first game of the series, Mississippi College took the early lead in the top of the first on an RBI Single by Megan Everett. The Choctaws added two more runs in the second on another RBI Single from Everett that scored two runs to stretch the lead to 3-0 MC. Mississippi College put up another run in the third, two in the fifth, and four more in the 6th to put the final score at 10-0.
Mississippi College carried the momentum from their game one win into the second game of the series on Monday afternoon jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Tylan Buckley led the inning off with a home run to left and was followed up with an RBI Double, and two RBI singles for a quick four runs. They scored two more unearned runs in the third after a Union error to lead off the inning that pushed MC's lead to 6-0 after three innings.
The Lady Bulldogs managed to shut out the Choctaws for the remainder of the game and got on the board in the sixth inning when
Rachel Ridolfi doubled down the left field line that allowed
Emily Bennett to come home and score to make the score 6-1. Union was not able to score anymore runs to drop the second game of the series.
Rachel Ridolfi went 2-for-3 in the game with the RBI Double in the sixth and
Hailey Cummings also recorded two singles.
Paige Taylor started the game for Union pitching going just 1.2 innings before giving the ball up to
Cassie Mills who tossed 5.1 innings without giving up any earned runs.
Mississippi College took the early lead once again in the third game scoring in the top of the second for the 1-0 lead on a sacrifice flyball.
Union answered in the bottom of the third inning scoring two runs on an RBI Triple from
Emily Bennett that scored
Marley Dyess and
Anna Morris. The Lady Bulldogs pushed another run across in the inning on a fielders choice from
Rachel Ridolfi that scored Bennett from third.
MC answered back in the next frame rattling off five runs on five hits and one Union error to take the 6-3 lead. Union cut the lead to two in the bottom half of the fourth when
Whitney Christian drove a double to left field scoring
Madison Tennyson.
MC stretched their lead in the top of the fifth putting up two runs sacrifice fly and an RBI Single to make the score 8-4. Union moved a runner into scoring position in the bottom of the seventh but was not able to mount a comeback falling to the Choctaws, 8-4.
Union's continues their home stretch with a makeup double header against Maryville Wednesday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs get back to GSC play on Saturday hosting Valdosta State in a double header at 1:00 p.m.
