Baseball splits with MC in GSC double header

CLINTON, Mississippi- The Union University baseball team split their Gulf South Conference double header with Mississippi College to move to 13-6 on the season and 7-4 in conference play. The series was cut short due to rain in Southeast.
Mississippi College got off to the early lead in the first game of the afternoon with an RBI Double in the second inning that gave the Choctaws the early 1-0 lead. MC put up runs in the fourth and fifth innings including a solo homer right from Carl Upton. The Choctaws put up four more runs in the eighth with a three run homer and an RBI Single to lead 7-0.
The Bulldogs finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth when Tyler Mauzy singled through the left side and drove home Charlie Ellis. Union could not manage to put up any more runs to fall 7-1.
Mauzy finished the game going 2-for-4 and Zach Wylie, Hayden Lewis, Charlie Ellis and Caleb DeMarigny each added hits in the game.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for Union going 5.0 innings, but earned the loss in the game. Matthew Pickard came in and threw the final 4.0 innings giving up four runs.
In the second game of the afternoon Union was the team that got on the board first and opened up the game with an RBI Single from Dylan Moore that scored Tyler Mauzy followed by Ryne Roper scoring on a wild pitch to give Union the early 2-0 lead.
Mississippi College was quick to answer back and put up three runs to take the lead on two RBI singles and sacrifice fly in the second and third innings.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the third when Wylie was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded that pushed home Mauzy from third. Union took the lead when Matthew Duncan hit an RBI double driving home both Moore and Roper on the play. The Bulldogs drove home two more runs in the inning to take the 7-3 lead.
MC answered once again in the next half inning with a solo homer to right and an RBI single to cut the Union lead to one run.
Union opened up the offense once again in the fifth with Charlie Ellis scoring on a wild pitch followed up by back-to-back RBI doubles from Zach Phillips and Mauzy and an RBI single from Roper that put four runs in the inning and set the eventual final at 11-6 to seal the series split.
Tyler Mauzy went the 2-for-4 with three runs scored and Ryne Roper went 2-for-3 with two runs in the final game. Teddy Christie started on the hill for Union going 3.2 innings and Joe Hudson came in to throw the final 3.1 innings to earn his third win of the year.
