HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University Bulldog basketball team fell to Barry 74-65 in the semifinals of the NCAA South Region Tournament Sunday afternoon. The loss ends the season for the Bulldogs who finished the year with a 21-11 record.
In the first half, Barry struck first with a three-pointer by Undra Mitchem, but Union responded quickly with a layup by
Roy Bullock. The Bulldogs were able to gain the lead 14-12 at the first media timeout. Union and Barry traded shots, but with the help of a 8-0 run lasting five minutes, Barry took the lead 33-26. The Buccaneers were able to hold their momentum ending the first half up 39-31.
Jordan Montgomery led all scorers with 14 points at the half, As a team, Union shot 41.9 (13-31) percent from the field.
Down eight points going into the second half, Union was able to rally back to get within one point of the Buccaneers, 47-46, with 14 minutes left in regulation. Barry quickly responded jumping ahead 50-46 with a three-pointer from Barrueta. The Buccaneers continued their hot shooting going on a seven-point run to boost their lead to 60-48. The Bulldogs were able to bust up their momentum when Mboup made two free throws off a foul call on Barry's Gonzalez. Union was able to hold on, going on a 9-0 run, getting within three points of the Buccaneers, 60-57. Barry brought their lead back up to 62-57 with a jumper by Burrueta. With 1:27 left in the second half, Mboup brought Union within five points, 66-61 with two free throws.
With 56.8 seconds left in the game Union forced a turnover and
Roy Bullock came up with the ball and drew a foul on the play. Immediately after the foul, Bullock and Barrueta of Barry got in a scrum on the court and after deliberation by the official, Bullock was charged with a technical foul. Both Barrueta and Bullock hit their two free throws that kept it a five-point game, 68-63. Barry hit back-to-back free throws and got a steal and a layup that stretched their lead to nine points with just 23 seconds left. Union got a quick two points on a fast-break layup from Goodwin, but Union could not mount a comeback for the win.
Jordan Montgomery put up seven more points in the second half to finish the game with 21 that led all scorers.
Serigne Mboup recorded a double-double in the game putting up 12 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Roy Bullock and
KC Goodwin were also in double figures scoring 11 points each. Union shot 39.6 percent from the field and 88.2 percent from the charity stripe, but just went 4-25 from behind the arc.

Serigne Mboup and
Marterrace Brock.
