JACKSON, Tennessee- The Union University men's basketball team won their fourth straight game with a 69-57 victory over West Georgia Thursday night. The win moves the Bulldogs into a third place tie with the Wolves and Delta State in the Gulf South Conference standings. Union improves to 16-6 on the season with a 10-6 record in the GSC.Union got off to a hot start to open up the contest outscoring West Georgia 21-2 in the first six minutes of the game with five different Bulldog players scoring led by
Jordan Montgomery with two 3's and a free throw. The next nine minutes of the match only saw three baskets from either team, but a combined 24 misses in the same span. The closing minutes of the half had better shooting from both teams with Union going into the locker room up 32-16.
Union opened the second half with two layups each from
Serigne Mboup and
Marterrace Brock to stretch their lead to 22 points with 17 minutes left to play. Both teams began trading baskets throughout the half with West Georgia coming within 9 points with 6:32 left in the game, but could not catch the Bulldogs who held on to win their fourth straight with a final score of 69-57.
After a shooting a combined 28 percent from the field in the first half, both teams found their groove in the second with the Bulldogs boosting their field goal percentage to 54 percent while West Georgia shot an even 50 percent. Union finished the game at 41.4 percent from the field but only made three 3's out of 22 shots from behind the arc, tying a season low.
Union was led by
Ashanti Day with 17 points and 14 boards for his 15th double-double of the year, while
Serigne Mboup had 11 points and 11 rebounds for his second of the season.
Marterrace Brock and
Jordan Montgomery also contributed in the win with 14 points and 13 points respectively.
The win for Union moves them into a three way tie for third place with West Georgia and Delta State in the Gulf South Conference Standings with 10-6 records with only six games left in the regular season. The top eight teams in the conference standings advance to the conference tournament with the top four teams hosting first round games before moving on to the semifinals and finals at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama.
Union hosts West Alabama on Saturday in their next matchup at 4:00 p.m. before a three game road stretch at Valdosta State, West Florida and North Alabama.
