Union men upset No. 23 UAH 92-84

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team posted a 92-84 win over No. 23 University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 19-8 overall and 13-9 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 20-6 on the season and 17-4 in the GSC.
 
Alabama Huntsville, having already clinched the GSC regular season crown and top seed in the tournament, entered the game as the No. 1 seed in the first NCAA D2 South Region Rankings released this week. With the win, Union has now defeated every team in the GSC at least once. UAH had knocked off Union each of the nine meetings in the series history. However, the past eight meetings had all been decided by 10 points or less, including that last two in overtime.
 
Union kept their hopes alive for a possible three or four seed in the GSC Tournament which would give the Bulldogs a home game in the quarterfinals. Union currently sits in a three way tie for third with Delta State and North Alabama. West Georgia has clinched the No. 2 seed.
 
Union plays their final regular season game Thursday night versus Christian Brothers at home at 8 p.m. Christian Brothers has already clinched a spot in the tournament, but is playing for either the seventh or eighth seed.
 
The Bulldogs opened the game hot, jumping out to a 23-9 lead after seven minutes of play. After a 3-pointer form Roy Bullock with 9:33 left in the first half, Union had extended their lead to 16 points, 34-18. UAH clawed back with an 11-0 run to cut their deficit to five, 34-29, in just a three minute span. Union stopped the UAH run and by the half, had pushed their lead back to double digits, 44-34.
 
Union's Marterrace Brock scored the first five points of the second half, giving Union a 49-34 lead. Union maintained control in the second half as UAH tried to come back. The Chargers got as close as six points down the stretch. UAH cut the deficit to six points in the final minute after three pointers on back-to-back possessions. However, Union broke the press twice for dunks from Montgomery and the Bulldogs hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the win.
 
Union was led by Jordan Montgomery with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Brock added 22 points, including 18 in the second half. Bullock scored 17 points while Serigne Mboup scored 10 points. Ashanti Day added eight points and nine rebounds. Union shot 46 percent from the field, 32 percent (9-28) from long range and 78 percent (25-32 free throws.
 
UAH was led by Greg Gardner with a game-high 28 points, all coming in the second half. Seab Webster scored 15 points, while Brandon Roberts added 10 points. The Chargers shot 48 percent from the field, 35 percent (8-23) from 3-point range and 80 percent (20-25) from the free throw line.
