Union men drop road contest at VSU 74-62

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University men's basketball team fell 74-62 at Valdosta State University Thursday night. Union dropped to 17-7 on the season and 11-7 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 14-9 overall and 10-8 in league play.
 
The loss dropped Union out of a four-way tie for second place. Union is now in a tie for fourth place with four regular season games remaining. The top eight teams advance to the GSC Tournament, while the top four seeds host a first round game.
 
Union fell behind early as Valdosta State scored seven straight points to start play. Union rallied and led 11-9 following a 3-pointer from Roy Bullock with 14:22 left in the half. However, Valdosta State stormed back ahead thanks to a 16-0 run to lead 25-11 with 8:43 left. Union cut into the deficit over the final eight minutes of the half. Following a 3-pointer from KC Goodwin, Union's halftime deficit was just eight points, 38-30.
 
In the second half, Union got as close as seven points early in the half, but Valdosta State again extended their lead back to double figures. The home Blazers led by as many as 17 points a few times including 72-55 with two minutes left in the game. Union closed out with a 7-2 run to set the final at 74-62.
 
Union was led by Bullock with 18 points including 4-of-6 shooting from long range. Ashanti Day added 14 points, while Serigne Mboup and Jordan Montgomery each added 10 points. Union's leading scorer, Marterrace Brock added just five points on a 21 per game average. Union shot 45 percent from the field, 32 percent (7-22) from 3-point range and 54 percent (7-13) from the free throw line.
 
Valdosta State shot well for the game, finishing at 56 percent from the field, 47 percent (7-15) from behind the arc and 85 percent (11-13) from the free throw line. The Blazers were led by Simon with 23 points. Justice added 13 points, while Hill scored 10 points.
