JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team returned from the Christmas break with a 77-65 win over the University of West Florida. Union improved to 10-3 on the season and 4-3 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The win for Union snapped a 3-game losing streak. Union improved their home record to 5-0 this year and a 3-0 mark in the GSC.
It took almost two minutes of play before either team scored. Union finally broke through with a layup from Serigne Mboup with18:05 left in the half. The teams went back and forth for the next 10 minutes before Union pushed out to a 17-13 lead at the 9:08 mark. West Florida led one final time, 21-20, with 4:50 left in the half. Union regained the lead for a short time but a 3-pointer by West Florida tied the game one last time, 30-30, with 1:37 left in the half. Union's Brennan Bowling answered with 3-pointer followed by a 3-pointer from KC Goodwin to give Union the 36-30 lead at halftime.
Union never trailed in the second half. Leading by just one, 43-42, with 14:16 left in the game, Union posted an 8-0 run to cushion their lead. West Florida got as close a five points a few times late, but Union extend their final lead to 12, the largest of the contest.
West Florida held the rebounding edge 41-39, including 13-11 on the offensive glass. Union committed just eight turnovers, while West Florida gave it up 12 times.
Union was led by Goodwin with 19 points including four 3-pointers. Bowling added 14 points on four 3-pointers, while Ashanti Day scored 11 points. Jordan Montgomery led with a game-high 12 rebounds, while Mboup added nine points and nine boards. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 37 percent (11-30) from long range and 79 percent (22-28) from the free throw line.
West Florida was led by Lendward Griffin with 20 points. Mario Stramaglia added 13 points, Jason Laatsch scored 11 points and Deangelo Legrier added 10 points. The Argos shot 39 percent from the field, 37 percent (8-22) from 3-point range and 83 percent (5-6) from the free throw line.
