Union drops first game with CBU 6-3

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University baseball team lost their first game of their Gulf South Conference series with Christian Brothers Friday afternoon 6-3. Union fell to 5-27 overall and 3-19 in conference while the Bucs improved to 9-15 and 4-11 in conference play.
 
Christian Brothers got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning with Cameron Coker doubling into the left field gap that scored Stephen Joe from second. Two batters late Caleb Goodwin crushed a ball over the centerfield fence to give the Bucs a 3-0 lead.
 
Union was quick to answer back and scored one in the bottom half of the fourth when Chaz Wilson scored on a single from Trae Bain.
 
The Bucs added another 2-run home run in the top of the sixth when Casey Goodwin hit one out to right field. CBU added another run in the eighth for a total of six runs.
 
Union chipped away in the bottom of the eighth when Ty Warnimont singled to right field with two outs but Bain and Smith were able to score before Warnimont was thrown out at second for the final out of the inning. Going into the bottom of the ninth, the Bulldogs trailed 6-3 and were able to get two runners into scoring position, but were not able to push any across in the final frame.
 
Freshman Ty Warnimont led the Bulldogs at the plate finishing the day 3-for-4 with 2 RBI's while Bain ended the day 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Marty Coursey started on the bump for Union and tossed 7.1 innings giving up four earned runs on 10 hits and struck out six batters. Jordan Luzod came on in the eighth inning in relief and tossed the remaining 1.2 innings giving up 2 hits with two strikeouts.
 
Peyton McArthur earned the win for Chrisitian Brothers giving up only one run in seven hits in seven innings of work.
 
Union finishes their GSC series with Christian Brothers on Saturday, April 4th, with a double header starting at 1:00 p.m.
