Union's rally comes up short in 5-4 loss

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University baseball team dropped their last non-conference game of the year against Arkansas Monticello 5-4. Union fell to 7-37 on the season.

Arkansas Monticello did not waste any time getting on the board scoring two runs in the top half of the first inning off of a two run double from Travis Steinke. The Weevils added another pair of runs in the fourth with a blast over right field fence from Brian Ray. They would add another run in the sixth to bring their lead to 5-0.

Union finally got on the bottom of the eighth with a check swing single to right field that scored Ty Warnimont and Davis Shoemaker.

The Bulldogs would threaten in the ninth when David Shoemaker scored on a drag bunt from Daniel Mathis who advanced to second on a throwing error. Mathis was driven home on a single from Warnimont over the shortstop but Union would fall short to lose the game 5-4.

Chaz Wilson started on the mound for the Bulldogs going 3.1 innings giving up two earned runs on four hits. Andrew Wilson came on in relief in the middle of the fourth inning giving up two runs over 2.2 innings of work and was then relieved by Jordan Luzod who gave up just one hit in 2.0 innings. Trae Bain finished out the game tossing a perfect ninth with two strikeouts.
