JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team lost 7-1 in the final game of the season to the University of West Georgia. Union dropped the first two games of the series 10-1 and 5-0. Union ends their season 7-39 overall and 5-28 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia improved to 31-13 overall and 22-10 in the GSC. The Wolves will be the No. 3 seed in the GSC Tournament.
Game 1 (UWG 10-1)
In the first game of the series, West Georgia jumped out the lead in the top of the third with Dalton Rogers driving in Artemis Kadkhodiaian on the play.
The Bulldogs answered back in the next inning when
Jim Martin squared up a ball for a solo homerun over the right field fence for his second of the year that tied the game at 1-1.
It was all West Georgia from that point on with the Wolves putting up three runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings that set the final at 10-1.
Marty Coursey started on the mound for Union going 6.2 innings giving up six earned runs.
Andrew Wilson finished out the game tossing the final 2.1 innings of play without giving up any runs and only two hits. Martin finished the game 1-for-3 while
Chaz Wilson 1-for-4 with a double.
Game 2 (UWG 5-0)
West Georgia kept their momentum from the first game and took the lead in the top of the second with Sumner McWhorter scoring on a Union error. The Wolves broke it open in the top of the sixth rattling off four runs on five hits.
Teddy Christie tossed his sixth complete game for the Bulldogs this season giving up four earned runs with four strikeouts.
Brady Cook had the only extra base hit for the Bulldogs with a double in the second inning.
Game 3 (UWG 7-1)
Union started
Preston Thompson on the mound in game three. The game was scoreless union West Georgia posted two runs in the fourth. A 2-RBI double from Borneman put the Wolves on top. West Georgia added four runs in the fifth, helped along by a couple of Union errors. West Georgia added a seven run in the sixth.
Union was able to avoid the shutout with a run in the eight.
Daniel Mathis drove in Davie Shoemaker. Union managed four hits in the game from four different players.
