VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Union University baseball team took one of three games in the weekend conference series at Valdosta State University. Union lost the first game 6-1 before coming back in the second game Saturday to win 2-1. Valdosta State topped Union 11-2 in the rubber game of the series. Union is now 5-26 on the season and 3-18 in the Gulf South Conference. VSU improved to 19-11 overall and 11-8 in league play.
Teddy Christie (2-4) stole the show in the win for Union in game two, tossing a complete game, allowing just one run on three hits with six strikeouts. Union scored a pair of runs in the third inning and Christie made that cushion hold up. Union's
Jim Martin hit a bases loaded single to left field scoring both the pinch runner
Daniel Mathis and
Ty Warnimont. Christie's only run allowed came in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly. Union had four hits in the game by four different players.
Game one of the series had Valdosta State jumping out to a 6-0 lead with single runs in the first, second innings, three in the sixth and one more in the seventh. Union added their only run of the game in the top of the ninth.
Hunter Smith singled with one out, moved up on a single by
Brady Cook, and then later scored on an error. Union scattered seven hits in the game, with two coming from Martin.
Marty Coursey (0-7) took the loss, allowing five runs, four earned on six hits with two strikeouts.
Jordan Luzod tossed 2.2 innings of relief, allowing one unearned run on three hits.
The final game of the series was all Valdosta State, scoring in each of the first three innings. Union scored single runs in the third and sixth innings, one coming on a wild pitch, the other on an error. Valdosta State tacked on three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and two more in the eighth to win 11-2. Union got a pair of hits from Martin and
Trae Bain in the game.
Caleb Warnimont and
Austin Orr scored the only two runs.
Skyler Harrison (1-6) took the loss, allowing eight runs, six earned on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Andrew Wilson tossed 2.2 innings of relief, allowing three runs on six hits with one strikeout.
Up next for Union will be a non-conference home double-header Tuesday, March 31 versus Martin Methodist (Tenn.) at 3 p.m.
