LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The No. 14 Union University women's basketball team posted an 86-63 win at the University of West Alabama Thursday night. Union improved to 10-1 on the season and 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 4-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Union scored the first five points of the game, but West Alabama stayed close in the first quarter. The home Tigers took a brief one point lead, 14-13, but Union regained control and led 19-16 after the first quarter. Union led 23-21 with 7:41 left in the second quarter when they started to pull away. Union posted a 11-0 run to lead 34-21 with 4:29 left. Union maintained a double digit lead the rest of the game, including a 43-30 halftime lead. Union extended their lead to as many as 28 points, 82-54 with 2:55 left in the game.
Union was led by freshman guard
Jada Smith with 15 points.
Tiara Caldwell added 14 points, while
Chelsea Bodiford and
Bethany Lytle each added 11 points.
Kelsey Risner led with 11 rebounds and
Jada Perkins led with nine assists. Union shot 53 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from 3-point range and 36 percent (4-11) from the free throw line.
West Alabama was led by Sydney King with 13 points. The Tigers shot 38 percent from the field, 19 percent (5-27) from long range and 55 percent (6-11) form the free throw line.
