CARROLLTON, Ga.- The Union University women's basketball team pulled out a 70-59 win over West Georgia Saturday to improve to 5-1 in Gulf South Conference play and 11-1 overall. West Georgia moves to 2-10 on the season and 2-5 in GSC games this season.Kelsey Risner opened up the game with a three to take the early lead but the Wolves were able to answer right back with a long ball of their own. Tiara Caldwell West Georgia went on a 11-0 run to lead the Lady Bulldogs 14-5 with 3:16 left in the first quarter. Union worked their way back through the remainder of the quarter to only trail by three, 16-13.
Union opened the second quarter with a 13-0 run spanning over five minutes to gain a 26-18 lead. The Bulldogs pushed their lead into double digits for the first time in the game with 3:39 left, but West Georgia quickly tied the game with 10 straight points of their own. Union scored six more before the half to go into the locker room with a 36-30 lead.
Throughout the third quarter the Lady Bulldogs did not lose the lead from halftime but West Georgia kept the game close never falling more than 6 points behind Union. The Lady Bulldogs would hold onto that lead throughout the fourth with help from the free throw line going 7-7 to put away the game with a 70-59 final score.
Freshman
Jada Smith led Union with 15 points and five assists with help from
Chelsea Bodiford adding 13 points and
Tiara Caldwell with 11. The Lady Bulldogs shot 45.1% from the field while going 15-17 from the free throw line in the game.
Union takes a 14 day break from action for the Holidays but will return in the new year when they host West Florida on Saturday, January 2nd, at 2:00 p.m.
