Union men cruise in 81-51 win over Brewton-Parker

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team posted an 81-51 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) College Monday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved to 4-0 on the season, while Brewton-Parker dropped to 4-5 overall.
 
Both teams struggled to make shots out of the gate. Union scored first almost three minutes into the game with a pair of free throws from Serigne Mboup. The game's first field goal did not come until the 17:53 mark when Brewton-Parker tied the game at 2-2. Union answered with a 3-pointer from Jordan Montgomery on the next possession. Montgomery's 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 run for Union. Brewton-Parker got as close as five points soon after, but Union quickly extended their lead to double figures. Union led by their largest margin of the first half, 22 points, 44-22 at the break.
 
In the second half, Union's lead stayed around the 20 point range for the first 10 minutes. Union then pushed away again, getting a 30 point lead 68-38 with 8:48 left to play. Union's largest lead of the game was 33 points, 75-42, before taking the final 81-51.
 
Union was led by Montgomery with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds. He was 5-of-9 from 3-point range. KC Goodwin added 18 points and Roy Bullock scored 15 points and led with six assists. Mboup grabbed 10 rebounds. Union shot 36 percent from the field, 37 percent (14-38) from long range and 68 percent (15-22) from the free throw line.
 
Brewton-Parker was led by Rodarius Mitchel with 10 points. Nine other players scored for the Barons but no one else in double figures. The Barons shot 29 percent from the field, 32 percent (7-22) from 3-point range and 73 percent (8-11) from the free throw line.
 
Up next for Union will be a pair of games in the Drury (Mo.) University Thanksgiving Classic. Union will face Truman State (Mo.) Friday at 1 p.m. and then will face host and No. 16 Drury Saturday at 3 p.m. Both games will be broadcast on 93.1 FM locally and online at www.uuathletics.com/live.
