JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team outlasted Central Baptist (Ark.) College with a 101-98 overtime win Tuesday night. Union improved to 3-0 on the season.
After Central Baptist scored first to lead 2-0, Union scored eight straight points over the next two and one half minutes. Four of those eight points coming from senior guard Marterrace Brock. Jordan Montgomery answered a Mustang basket with the game's first 3-pointer putting Union up 11-4. With Union leading 13-6, Roy Bullock and Montgomery hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put Union up 19-6 with 14:37 left in the half. Serigne Mboup joined the 3-point action as he and Bullock went back-to-back from long range, answering a pair of three pointers from Central Baptist.
However, Central Baptist also got hot from long range, posting a 16-6 run, including four 3-pointers during that stretch. At the second media time out with 11:43 left in the half, Union's lead was just 25-22. Central Baptist cut the deficit to just one point, 25-24, before Union's Mboup connected for a layup to stop the run. With 9:31 left in the half, Central Baptist completed their comeback when Tony Brewster drained a 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer to tie the game at 29-29.
Coming out of a Union 30 second timeout, the Bulldogs scored five straight including a 3-pointer form Brennon Bowling to regain the lead. Union extend their lead to as many as six points but Central Baptist stayed close. With less than a minute left in the half, Union's Brock hit his first and team's eighth 3-pointer of the half to put Union up 47-42. Union got the ball back and with 20 seconds, Bowling hit a pair of free throws to extend Union's lead to 49-42. Union got the rebound and after a break away dunk from Brock with three seconds left, Union led 51-42 at the half.
Union slowly extended their lead out of the halftime break and at the 11:32 timeout, Union had matched their largest lead of the game at 13 points, 68-55. Then, back-to-back 3-pointers from Brock and Bullock put Union up 74-59 with just under 10 minutes to play.
But again Central Baptist refused to go away. With Union leading 79-67 with 7:54 left, Central Baptist scored nine straight points to cut Union's lead to just three points, 79-76, with 6:12 left in the game. Senior transfer Mboup stopped the run with a jump hook in the lane to put Union up 81-76 with 5:40 left. However, the Mustangs continued to push, cutting Union's lead down to two points, 83-81 with just under four minutes to play. Then with 2:29 left, a 3-pointer from Central Baptist's TeShawn Sims gave the Mustangs their first lead of the game since it was 2-0, 84-83.
Roy Bullock took a long offensive rebound and drained a long two pointer to put Union back on top briefly. Tony Brewster tied the game with one of two free throws with 1:10 left. Union missed a shot on their next possession, giving Central Baptist the ball with 46 seconds left in the game. Central Baptist called a timeout with 28 seconds left in the game and 12 seconds left on the shot clock. The Mustangs turned the ball over on the inbounds pass to give Union a shot for the win. Brock missed a 3-pointer for the win, sending the game to overtime.
In overtime, Union's Mboup scored first to give Union the early lead. After a basket by the Mustangs, Union's Brock hit one of two free throws to give Union the 88-87 lead with 3:31 left in overtime. Brock again hit one of two free throws, giving Union two point lead. But Central Baptist answered with 3-pointer to lead 90-89. Then Union's Brock then hit a 3-pointer to put Union up 92-90 with just under two minutes left. Union got a steal and after an intentional foul called against Central Baptist, Union's Montgomery hit two free throws to give Union a 94-90 lead with 1:54 left and possession. KC Goodwin then stepped up with a 3-pointer to give Union a 97-90 lead. But then the Mustangs answered with a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 97-93 with 1:27 left. After both teams failed to score on possessions, CBC's McBride was fouled on the break hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 97-95 with 31 seconds left to play. Having been whistled for only three fouls in the second half and overtime, Central had to spend several seconds to get Union into the shooting bonus. With 25 seconds left, Goodwin went to the line and hit two free throws to put Union up 99-95. Brewster answered with a 3-pointer on the other end to cut the Union lead down to just one, 99-98 with 17 seconds left. Goodwin missed the front end of a one-and-one giving Central Baptist a chance. The Mustangs missed with three seconds left and Union gained possession and was fouled. Goodwin went to the line for Union with two seconds on the clock and hit both free throws. A half court shot by Central Baptist was off the mark giving Union the 101-98 win.
Union was led by Brock with 23 points and Montgomery with 22 points. Bullock added 15 points, Mboup scored 13 points and Bowling added 11 points. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 49 percent (16-33) from long range, and 68 percent (13-19) from the free throw line.
Central Baptist was led by Sims with 20 points and Brewster with 17. Albright added 15 points, Brown scored 12 and McBride scored 11. The Mustangs shot 48 percent from the field, 52 percent (16-31) from 3-point range and 57 percent (8-14) from the free throw line.
Up next for Union will be an exhibition game Friday, November 20 in Logan, Utah versus NCAA DI Utah State University at 8:00 p.m. central time. Union next regular season action is Monday, November 23 at home versus Brewton-Parker (Ga.) at 7:00 p.m.
