Union drops exhibition at Utah State

LOGAN, Utah- The Union University men's basketball team fell to Utah State University Friday night 73-49 in an exhibition matchup.

Both teams were slow out of the gate with Utah State hitting a lone three and a tip-in in the first 3:30 in the half. Union would miss their first five shots of the game before a layup courtesy of Jordan Montgomery with 16:38 on the clock. Montgomery would then hit a three minutes later setting the score at 15-8 Utah State. The Aggies were then able to find their groove going on a19-2 run over an eight minute span to lead Union 34-12 with 2:58 left. The Aggies would hold that pace into the half ahead 38-14.

The Bulldogs regained their composure after the break with back to back layups from Roy Bullock and Marterrace Brock but Utah State answered back with 10 straight points of their own. Union got back on their game going on a 10-2 run of their own to trail 57-32 with 8:31 left in the game. The back to back runs made way to back and forth basketball with both teams trading baskets with Brock scoring seven straight for the Bulldogs. However, Utah State held onto their comfortable lead winning the game with a 73-49 final.

After scoring only 14 points in the first half, Union was even with Utah State in the second with both teams scoring 35 points. The Bulldogs also only had three turnovers in the second half compared to 10 in the first.

Marterrace Brock led Union with 15 points and with Roy Bullock ending the night with 12. Serigne Mboub paced the Bulldogs in rebounds with 12 total boards with eight coming on the offensive side of the ball. Union shot 29.4% from the field after going 6-30 in the first half and shot 6-27 from behind the arc.

"I was proud of my team for the resilience they showed in the second half," said Union head coach David Niven after the game. "We weren't great, but we were better."

Despite the loss, the game does not count to Union's season record and the Bulldogs still keep their perfect 3-0 record.

Union returns home for their next matchup against Brewton-Parker on Monday at 7:00 p.m. then travel to Springfield, Mo. Thanksgiving weekend for two games against Truman State and Drury.
