Union women’s soccer gets road win in season opener



NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team posted a 1-0 victory at Trevecca Nazarene University Friday night. The match was the first of the season for each team and also marked the first official NCAA DII match for both programs. Union and Trevecca have been approved as active members of the NCAA Division II and can compete now for conference, region, and national postseason play.
                    
The match's only goal game in the 34th minute of play from Jackson native and Memphis transfer Honeye Heydari. Senior Elizabeth Clark recorded the assist. Union outshot Trevecca 8-4 in the first half. Trevecca led in shots 5-4 in the second half but Union's defense kept the Trojans out of net.
 
Emily Waggoner played all 90 minutes in goal, recorded three saves. Liz Denton was the keeper for Trevecca, allowing the one goal with six saves.
 
Heydari led Union with five shots while Kayleigh Patterson, Shelby High, and Morgan Ballek each added two shots.
 
Union's next match will be their home opener, Friday, September 12 at 5:00 p.m. Union welcomes former conference foe and NAIA power Martin Methodist to Smith Soccer Complex.
