JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University women's soccer team fell 4-2 to NAIA No. 13 Martin Methodist College in the season opener for the Lady Bulldogs. Union dropped to 1-1 overall, while Martin Methodist improved to 4-1 on the season.
The match was tied 2-2 after a quick goal by Union's
Honeye Heydari just 30 seconds into the second half. The score remained tied until the 85
th minute. Martin Methodist struck twice in the final five minutes, including a goal in the 90
th minute to set the final at 4-2.
Martin Methodist is an old foe of Union's from the old TranSouth Conference in the NAIA. The RedHawks are ranked No. 13 in the NAIA this season, and have been a perennial power, including two NAIA National Championships.
Union scored first in the match on Heydari's first of two goals. She used a pair of assists from
Morgan Ballek and
Kayleigh Patterson in the sixth minute to put Union up 1-0. Martin Methodist tied the match with a goal from Anna Becerra off a corner kick in the 18
th minute. Jennifer Munoz then gave the RedHawks the lead in the 41
st minute when she kicked in a rebound. The score was 2-1 in favor of Martin Methodist at the half.
After Heydari tied the match, Pamela Gorgona scored both of Martin Methodist's goals in the final five minutes to win the match for her team.
Union's
Emily Waggoner and
Kristen Francis split time in goal with 45 minutes each. Waggoner allowed two first half goal with two saves, while Francis allowed the two late goals with three saves. Jhani Williams was in net for the RedHawks for 45:30 and was relieved by Samantha Wilson after Heydari's match-tying goal. Williams had two saves.
Martin Methodist outshot Union 11-7 in the match, including 6-2 in the second half. The shots were even at 5-5 in the first half.
Up next for Union will be another home non-conference match against another former conference for and NAIA ranked opponent. Union will host No. 8 Cumberland Monday at 5:00 p.m.
