Box Score CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University softball team posted a 5-4 win over Lee (Tenn.) University Thursday evening to claim the 2014 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Title. This marks the second straight MidEast Region Title for Union and now the Lady Bulldogs look win back-to-back titles in next week's NCCAA National Championships.
The win over Lee was Union's second in as many days in the tournament. Union swept through the region tournament with a 3-0 record, improving their season record to 28-25.
In this game, Union trailed 4-0 after two innings as Lee scored one in the first and three more in the second. It seemed Lee was going to push the tournament into the "if necessary" game to decide the title. However, Union's defense settled down and the offense started chipping away.
Union scored a run in the bottom of the third inning when
Shelby Lamb scored on a fielding error. In the fourth inning, Union added two more runs to cut the deficit to 4-3. Union scored on another Lee error and then added the second run on a ground out,
Reagan Schrader and Lamb each recording the RBI. Then in the bottom of the sixth, Union tied the game when
Whitney Christian scored on a wild pitch. Union took the lead as Lamb hit a sacrifice fly record her second RBI of the game.
Kelly Robey (22-18) tossed a complete game for the win, allowing four runs, two earned runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Angie Hughes (16-13) took the loss in relief, allowing two earned runs in two innings of work. Annabeth Pruett tossed the first four innings, allowing three runs, no earned runs in the no decision.
Union was out hit 9-8 by Lee and both teams combined for seven errors, four by Union.
Union will return to Bluefield, Va. May 15-17 for the national tournament. Union won last year's NCCAA National Title in Bluefield.
