Union softball tops Lee 7-3 in region opener

CLINTON, Miss. – The Union University softball began the defense of their 2013 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Title with a 7-3 victory over Lee (Tenn.) University to open the NCCAA MidEast Region Tournament. Union improved to 26-25 on the season, while fellow Gulf South Conference foe Lee dropped to 23-23.
 
Union scored first with a run in the bottom of the first when Alex Williams scored Reagan Schrader on a sacrifice fly. Lee scored twice in the second and once more in the third to take a 3-1 advantage.
 
However, Union responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead for good. After Union loaded the bases with one out, Amanda Chandler started the scoring with a 2-RBI single. Summer Cross singled to drive in the third run, while Chandler scored the fourth run on a throwing error.
 
Union's Kelly Robey (20-18) earned the win by tossing a complete game, allowing three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and six walks. Union pounded out 10 hits in the game, with two each coming from Erin Picard, Shelby Lamb, and Cross. Chandler's two RBI led the way for Union.
 
Angie Hughes (15-12) took the loss for Lee, allowing seven runs, six earned on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Annabeth Pruett tossed the final 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Lee had six hits with two each coming from A. Lynn and L. Stevens. Stevens led with a pair of RBI.
 
Union advances in the winners bracket to play  Mississippi College at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday night. Lee will drop to the losers bracket and will face Hiwassee at 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
