Union softball wins series at West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Union University softball team posted a series win at the University of West Georgia. Union took the first game 1-0 behind a no-hitter from Kelly Robey. West Georgia won game two 3-1, while Union responded in the third game of the series with a 7-4 victory. Union ends the regular season with a 25-25 overall record and a 9-19 mark in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia ends the regular season 25-26 overall and 11-18 in league play.
 
In the first game, Union scored an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning, giving Union the win and helping Robey (19-18) to no-hit performance. Robey struck out 10 batters in seven innings. Union scored when Amanda Chander was hit by a pitch, advanced to second when Summer Cross reach safely on an error. Chandler then scored on a single by Whitney Christian. Union managed just four hits in the game, from four different players.
 
In game two, both Union and West Georgia scored a run in the first inning. Union's tally came when Shelby Lamb's single drove in Christian who had singled to lead off the game. West Georgia added two runs in the third to set the score at 3-1. Neither team scored the rest of the way. Alex Williams (2-2) took the loss, allowing three runs in two innings of work, not retiring a batter in the third inning. Robey tossed four innings of scoreless relief, striking out seven hitters. Union managed six hits as a team with Williams getting two.
 
The final game of the series provided much more office that the previous two. Union scored first for the third time in the 3-game series. Union scored twice in the top of the third inning. Lamb's 2-RBI single did the damage to put Union on top. West Georgia tied the game with a run in the third and one more in the fourth. Union then exploded for five runs in the sixth inning. Christian (walk), Chandler (single), and Reagan Schrader (sacrifice fly) each recorded an RBI, while Lamb again struck with her second 2-RBI single of the game. West Georgia made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh with two runs, but Union stopped the rally with a 7-4 win. Robey earned her second win of the series, allowing four runs on six hits with five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
 
Up next for Union will be the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament at Mississippi College, May 7-10.
