Union softball swept at West Alabama

LIVINGSTON, Ala. – The Union University softball team lost both games in a Saturday afternoon double-header at the University of West Alabama, 3-2 and 13-5. West Alabama then took the third and final game of the series Sunday 1-0. Union dropped to 23-21 on the season and 7-14 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 23-18 overall and 10-11 in league play.
 
The first game of the double-header marked the second straight game for Union to lose a game in the bottom of the seventh inning. This past Wednesday, Union led at Trevecca Nazarene in game two of a double-header before losing 2-1. Today, Union held a 2-1 lead going into West Alabama's bottom of the sixth. The Lady Tigers scored a run in the bottom of the six to tie the game and then added the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Union managed just four hits by four different players in the game, with their RBI coming from Reagan Schrader and Whitney Christian with one each. Kelly Robey (17-16) allowed three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts in the complete game loss. Schrader hit her team best 12th home run of the year to lead of the fourth inning. West Alabama scored in the seventh with a lead-off hit by pitch, stolen base, passed ball, and a single.
 
West Alabama dominated the second game from the start. The Lady Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning and added five runs in the second to lead 12-0. They added a run in the third to lead 13-0. Union scored five runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined but lost 13-5 in the run-rule shortened game. Hailey Cummings (5-4) took the loss allowing five runs on three hits with a pair of walks in one third of an inning of work. Cheyenne Mauldin allowed five runs in one inning of work, while Alex Williams tossed the final 2.2 innings, allowing three runs. Schrader led Union offensively with a 3-for-3 game including two RBI and her team best 13th home run of the year.
 
The third game was again another close contest by Union, but the Lady Bulldogs just couldn't pull out a win. For the third time in the last four games, and the second time in this series, Union lost on a run scored in the bottom of the seventh inning. West Alabama scored the game's only run on a bases loaded walk. Robey tossed a complete game for Union and had just five walks in the game, but four in the final inning. After the first two reached on walks. A sacrifce moved the runners to second and third. Robey then intentionally walk the next hitter to load the bases with one out. Following a strikout, a four walk in the inning produced the game winning RBI. Union outhit West Alabama 6-2 in the game, including two hit from Alex Williams
