Union softball takes final game versus No. 18 Valdosta State

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball salvaged the third game of the three-game weekend series versus No. 18 Valdosta State (Ga.) University at Fesmire Field. Valdosta State won Saturday's game 7-1. The two teams then split the double-header with Valdosta State winning 18-0, and Union responding with an 8-6 win. Union now sits at 20-16 on the year and 5-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State is now 29-9 overall and 13-6 in league play.

In game three of the series, Union responded by jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  Amanda Chandler , McKinley Tribble, and Erin Picard each recorded and RBI. The big blow was a 2-RBI single by Cheyenne Mauldin. After Valdosta State got on the board with a run in the third, Union's Carter Mansolino scored Alex Williams to put Union up 6-1. Union added two more runs in the fifth inning on a 2-run home run from Reagan Schrader. Union led 8-3 going into the top of the seven. The Lady Blazers made things interesting with three runs in the seventh and had the tying run on second base with one out. However, Union's Kelly Robey (14-12) got a strikeout and ground out to end the game. Robey tossed a complete game in the win, striking out six and allowing six runs, five earned on eight hits. Union pounded out 13 hits in the game with five different players getting two hits each.

The first game of the day Sunday afternoon was all Valdosta State as the Lady Blazers took advantage of five Union errors and 11 hits to explode for an 18-0 victory. Ten of those runs were unearned. Union managed just two hits in the game. Robey started and took the loss, allowing two earned runs and eight runs overall on five hits with three strikeouts in three innings. Cummings and Mauldin tossed the final two innings in relief.
The series opener Saturday afternoon, Valdosta State scored single runs in the first and second innings and added two more in the fourth to lead 4-0. Union scored their lone run in the sixth inning on a bases loaded ground out. Valdosta put the game away with three runs in the top of the seventh to win 7-1. Robey took the loss in a complete game effort, allowing seven runs, six earned on 12 hits with 10 strikeouts. Union managed just two hits in the loss.

Up next for Union will be the first of 12 straight scheduled road games. Union travels to Walsh (Ohio) University and Malone (Ohio) University for a pair of double-headers April 2-3.
