Union softball sweeps Missouri S&T, 7-4, 4-3

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team posted a double-header sweep over Missouri University S&T Wednesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 19-14 on the season, while Missouri S&T dropped to 5-16 overall.
 
Union has now won six of their last seven games, including four straight.
 
In the first game, Missouri S&T scored a unearned run in the first to take the early lead. Union got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the second inning. Alex Williams hit a 2-RBI single to right field with two outs, scoring Carter Mansolino and Cheyenne Mauldin. Union added two more runs in the third. Summer Cross singled to drive in McKinley Tribble, who was running for Shelby Lamb. Mauldin then walked with the bases loaded to earn an RBI. After a Missouri S&T run in the fourth cut the lead to 4-2, Union added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Amanda Chandler's RBI double followed by a RBI single from Cross put Union up 6-2. The Minors added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings, while Union tacked on another run in the fifth to set the final at 7-4. A Williams ground out provided the seventh run of the game for Union. Kelly Robey (13-10) earned the complete game win, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with 14 strikeouts. Williams led Union with three RBI, while Reagan Schrader led with two hits and two runs.
 
The second game was scoreless until Union struck for four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Mansolino and Hailey Cummings opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Williams followed with a 3-run home run to left field, her second of the season. Whitney Christian then singled and Lamb doubled to set up an RBI sacrifice bunt from Schrader to set the score at 4-0. Missouri S&T responded with three runs in the top of the six. Robey relieved Cummings with two outs in the sixth to earn her second save of the season, allowing no runs on one hit with one strikeout. Cummings, who also went 1-for-2 in the game, pushed her record to 5-3 with the win. Cummings allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Christian led with three hits and Williams led with three RBI. Williams had six RBI on the day for Union with one run scored, accounting for seven of Union's 11 runs in the double-header.
 
Up next for Union will be a home conference series, March 29-30 versus No. 18 Valdosta State (Ga.).
