Union softball earns split at No. 15 North Alabama

FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University softball team earned a double-header split at No. 15 University of North Alabama. North Alabama won the first game 4-2, but then Union responded with a 2-1 victory in the second game. Union improved to 16-14 on the season and 3-9 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama dropped to 28-7 on the season and 13-4 in league play.

In the second game, Union trailed by one after North Alabama scored in the bottom of the first. The scored remained 1-0 until the top of the fourth inning. Amanda Chandler doubled with two outs, driving in two runs to put Union on top. Shelby Lamb singled and Cheyenne Mauldin walked to set up the tying and go ahead runs. Kelly Robey did the rest by tossing a complete game, allowing just one run on six hits with five strikeouts. Lamb led with two hits for Union.

The first game had Union scoring first with a run in the first on a wild pitch. That score stood until the bottom of the sixth when North Alabama exploded for four unearned runs. Union added a tally in the seventh put fell 4-1. Robey (11-10) tossed all six innings, allowing the four unearned runs on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Reagan Schrader led with two hits.
