Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team split their two games Friday afternoon in the
2014 Union University Softball Classic. Union fell in their first game 3-0 to Truman State (Mo.) University, and the responded in a big way with a 15-0 win over Hiwassee (Tenn.) College. Union moved to 8-5 on the season.
In the 15-0 win over Hiwassee, Union scored 12 runs in the first inning to put the game away. Union scored the 12 runs on 10 hits and two Hiwassee errors. Union added a single runs in the third and fourth innings before the game ended by run-rule. Union hit three doubles in the game and four triples. Pinch-hitter, junior pitch
Kelly Robey, in just her fourth plate appearance of the season hit the game's only home run.
Hailey Cummings (1-1) earned her first collegiate win of her career, tossing five innings for the shutout, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts and a walk.
Shelby Lamb led the way with a 3-for-3 game, three RBI, and three runs scored.
In the first game, a 3-0 loss to Truman State, the offense was much harder to come by. Truman State hurler Kindra Henze (2-1) tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three hits with eight strikeouts. Union's Robey (6-3) also tossed a complete game, but took the loss allowing three runs, two earned on six hits with nine strikeouts.
In the other two games of the day, Walsh (Ohio) defeated Hiwassee 7-0. Then it was Truman State knocking off Walsh 10-1.
Four more games are set for Saturday in the classic beginning at 9 a.m.
