BOTETOURT, Va. – The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Blue Field, Virginia for the 2013 NCCAA National Tournament. Union, the six seed in the tournament, topped the number 3 seed Simpson University (Calif.) 1-0 in their first game. Union improved to 25-20 on the year with their fourth straight win, while Simpson fell to 34-27.
Offense was held to a minimum for both teams by outstanding pitching performances from Union's
Kelly Robey and Simpson's Haley Rodriguez. Union scored their only run in the third inning off a single from
Tobie Joy and an RBI double from
Shelby Lamb. One run was enough of a lead for the Lady Bulldogs as Robey held the Red Hawks to just six hits and no runs for her fifth shutout of the year. Robey (13-9) recorded seven strikeouts and just one walk. Union was to held to just five hits coming from five different Lady Bulldogs. Joy,
Carter Mansolino, and
Caylee Crews each contributed singles while Lamb and
Sam Giesler added one double each.
Union advances in the NCCAA National Tournament to play the No. 2 seed Central Baptist (Ark.) on Friday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m.
