Kirk’s one-hitter sends Union softball to NCCAA Nationals

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball defeated Tennessee Temple University 4-0 Thursday in the championship game of the 2013 National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament. Union improved to 24-20 on the season while Tennessee Temple ended their season 26-19 overall.
 
Union senior and Bolivar, Tenn. native Keaton Kirk (2-1)made her last start at home as a Union Lady Bulldogs one of her best as she tossed a complete game 1-hitter. Kirk had her no-hitter broken up with one out in the top of the seventh inning. Kirk pitched seven innings, allowing one hits, two walks, and had a runner reach on an error.
 
The Union offense gave Kirk plenty of run support early. The Lady Bulldogs struck for three runs in the top of the second inning. DeShuni Sander had a RBI single, followed by a two-RBI single from Alex Williams. Union added a fourth run in the fourth innings when Stephanie Saunders scored after leading off the inning with a double.
 
Union advances to the NCCAA National Tournament host by Bluefield College in Botetourt, Virginia at the Botetourt Softball Complex, May 9-11.
 
Also, with the win, Union head coach Heather Hall earns the NCCAA MidEast Region Coach of the Year. She joins Union's Kelly Robey as MidEast Region Pitcher of the year, and Robey, Shelby Lamb, Alex Williams, and Brooke Thomas with all-region honors.
