HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University baseball team lost a pair of games Saturday at NCAA DII No. 4 University of Alabama-Huntsville. The UAH Chargers took game one 3-1 and game two 5-2. Union dropped to 7-23 on the season and 2-14 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama-Huntsville improved to 26-7-1 overall and 10-2-1 in league play.
In the first game, UAH took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and added a third run in the fifth to go up 3-0. Union answered with a run in the eighth but got no more. UAH outhit Union 10-6 in the game. Union committed the game's only error. Union was led by
Colton Speed with two hits.
Jim Martin earned Union's only RBI on a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Speed and
Benjie Fesmire led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Union's
Jared Davis (0-7) tossed a complete game, allowing 10 hits and three runs on five strikeouts in his eight innings. Busby (5-1) earned the win for the Chargers, going seven innings allowing one run on six hits with four strikeouts. Paulson earned the save with a perfect final two innings, getting three strikeouts.
Game two, a seven inning contest, had the Chargers scoring first again with a run in the first. Union responded with two runs in the third inning to take the lead. Martin again produced the two RBI for Union with a two-out double. He drove in Speed and
John Reed who both reached. Alabama-Huntsville regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, then added insurance with two more in the sixth. Both pitchers tossed complete games, with Wright (3-1) earning the win, allowing two runs on three hits with 10 strikeouts.
Derek Roof (2-5) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits and did not strike out a batter. Speed, Martin, and Fesmire each tallied one hit, with Martin leading with two RBI.
Union and UAH will completed the 3-game series April 7 at 1:00 p.m.
