JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team ended the 2013 regular season with a double-header sweep over conference foe Christian Brothers University. Union won 6-5 in game one, then rolled in game two, 9-1. Union improved to 11-32 on the season and 4-21 in league play. Christian Brothers dropped to 9-35 overall and 1-24 in league play.
Union scored in each of the first five innings on their way to a 6-5 win. Union scored once in the first, third, fourth, and fifth, while posting a pair of runs in the second. Union held off Christian Brothers who scored a run in the second, three in the third and one more in the fifth. Senior
Jared Davis started and lasted 2.2 innings.
Cody Cunningham (3-4) tossed the next five innings, allowing just one run.
Trae Bain got the final out of the eighth inning, while senior
Benjie Fesmire (1) earned the save witha perfect ninth inning.
John Reed and Fesmire led Union with two hits each, while
Zach Wylie led with a pair of RBI.
Game two was dominated by junior pitcher
Derek Roof (3-7) who tossed six innings of the seven inning game. He allowed just two hits and one run while striking out two. He faced just 21 batters in his six innings of work. The office did their part also, pounding out nine hits. Union scored two in the first and one in the second, before pushing five runs across in the fourth. Union added a final run in the sixth.
Wacey Russell,
Jim Martin,
Cole McAdams, and
Colton Speed each had two hits, while Martin and McAdams led with two RBI each. Russell extended his on-base streak to 12 games. He has hit safely in seven of his last nine games.
Up next for Union will be the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) MidEast Region Tournament. It will be played May 9-11 at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tenn.
