Union sweeps Washington University (Mo.)

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lady Bulldogs traveled to St. Louis, Missouri Monday afternoon to play Washington University in double header action. Union swept Washington 5-1 in game one and 10-2 in game two. Union improves to 21-18 on the season while Washington University falls to 25-11.

Offense got off to a slow start for both teams, but Washington University scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 1-0 lead. Union answered in the sixth inning with four runs on five hits and one error. Sam Giesler hit a solo homerun to tie the game 1-1. Singles from Stephanie Saunders, Summer Cross, Reagan Schrader, and Caylee Crews started the offense for Union. Crews put two runs on the board for Union for Union to lead 4-1. Union scored their last run of the game on an RBI single from Amanda Chandler to score DeShuni Sanders. Brooke Thomas (9-9) earned the win with five hits and one walk in seven innings of work.

In game two of the afternoon, Union took an early lead in the first inning on a solo shot from Alex Williams to go up 1-0. Union had a big fourth inning with seven runs. Singles from Caylee Crews, Sam Giesler, Stephanie Saunders, Tobie Joy, DeShuni Sanders, and Shelby Lamb combined for seven hits to go up 8-0 over Washington. Union added two more runs in the fifth on a two-run homerun from Katie Beth Fesmire to go up 10-0. Washington scored their only two runs in the bottom of the frame but did not score enough runs to hold off the run-rule. Union won in five innings for their second run-rule win in five games. Kelly Robey (11-8) earned the win with just five hits and six strikeouts. Union was led on the day by Shelby Lamb who went 5 for 8 with three RBI.

Up next for Union is a road series in Nashville, Tennessee against former TranSouth rivals Trevecca Nazarene on April 25 at 3 and 5 pm.
