JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team posted a 5-0 shutout victory over Blue Mountain (Miss.) College Tuesday afternoon at Fesmire Field. Union improved to 8-28 overall, while Blue Mountain dropped to 10-31.
The win for Union snapped 12-game losing skid dating back to a 15-5 win at Harding (Ark.) March 26. Union also played a non-ranked team for the first time in eight games. Union's 9-7 loss at North Alabama March 30 was the last game versus a non-ranked team.
Union scored first in the bottom of the first inning.
Wacey Russell led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly from
Cole McAdams.
Union scored five runs in the game with single tallies in the first, fourth, sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Both teams produced 10 hits each in the game with neither team able to break open for a big inning. Union got two RBI from McAdams and
Zach Wylie, while
Hunter Smith tallied one RBI. Russell, McAdams, and Wylie each led with two hits apiece.
Senior Jackson native
Benjie Fesmire (3-2) had all the run support he needed as he tossed 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits with two strikeouts.
Trae Bain (1) entered the game after three straight singles in the eighth and tossed the final 1.2 innings of scoreless relief for the save.
Up next for Union will be a home game versus NAIA No. 18 William Carey (Miss.) Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. This will be the ninth time in the last 10 games for Union to face a ranked opponent. It will be the 15
th time Union has face a ranked opponent on the season. Union is 3-11 so far in those previous 14 meetings.
