JACKSON, Tenn. – The Lady Bulldogs faced the Wolves of West Georgia for the second time this season, splitting with West Georgia earlier in the year. Union swept the Wolves at home Saturday afternoon to improve to 18-14 on the season and 13-13 in Gulf South Conference play.
Union won the first game of the double header 2-0. Offense was slow to start for both teams. Union scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on an RBI single from
Summer Cross to score
Reagan Schrader to lead 1-0. Cross added another run to Union's lead in the sixth with a solo home run to go up 2-0, her first of the season. Union was led by Cross who went 2-3 in game one and scored both runs in the game. Outstanding pitching from senior
Brooke Thomas held West Georgia to just two hits and no runs for her third shutout of the season. Thomas improved to 7-7 on the season, recording three strikeouts and only on walk in seven innings of work.
Union was faced with some adversity early in game two in the first inning when Nicole Yancey hit a solo home run to give West Georgia an early lead 1-0. Union finally answered back in the bottom of the fourth inning when
Shelby Lamb tied the game 1-1 with her eighth home run of the season. The Lady Bulldogs added a few more runs to their lead in the sixth with four runs on four hits.
Carter Mansolino started the rally for Union with a 2 RBI single to score
Cheyenne Mauldin and
Katie Beth Fesmire.
Summer Cross continued her hot streak with an RBI triple to score Mansolino.
Sam Giesler added to Union's lead with an RBI single to score Cross to lead 5-1. A scoreless seventh by West Georgia gave Union the win 5-1. Union was led in game two by
Carter Mansolino who went 2-3 with 2 RBI.
Kelly Robey improved to 10-6 on the season.
Up next for Union is a home series against Shorter on April 14 at 1 and 3 pm.
