Top-ranked Delta State sweeps Union 10-3 and 2-1

JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team fell twice Saturday afternoon to the NCAA DII No. 1 Delta State University Statesmen. Union lost 10-3 in the first game, then fell 2-1 in the second game. Union is 7-27 overall and 2-17 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improved to 29-5-1 on the season and a league best 14-2-1.
 
In game one, Delta State took control early with seven runs in the top of the second. Chovanec blasted a two-run home run in the frame. After that top half of the second, both teams played scored three runs each. Union scored in the bottom of the second then added two runs in the  bottom of the fourth. Zach Wylie earned all three RBI for Union, first with a bases loaded walk in the second, followed by a two RBI double in the fourth. Union starter Jared Davis (0-8) lasted just two innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits. Will Embry tossed the final seven innings for Union in relief, allowing just three runs, one earned on seven hits. Josh Branstetter (6-1) earned the win for the Statesmen, going 7.2 innings, allowing three hits and three runs with six strikeouts.
 
Game two was much closer as both pitchers dominated. Union's Derek Roof (2-6) tossed a complete game seven innings in the loss. He allowed two runs on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Colton Mitchell (5-1) earned the win for Delta State, tossing 5.2 innings allowing two hits and one run. Taylor Stark (4) earned the save with 1.1 innings of one hit relief. Union scored their only run in the bottom of the sixth when Benjie Fesmire's two-out pinch-hit single scored Wacey Russell from second.
 
The two teams will complete the series April 14 at 2:00 p.m. at Union.
