CARROLLTON, Ga. – The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Carrollton, Georgia for a conference double header against West Georgia. Union split the double header winning the first game 6-2 in 10 innings but dropping the second game 5-3. Union moves to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in Gulf South Conference play.
In the first game of the afternoon, Union fell to an early deficit in the first inning falling 2-0. The Lady Bulldogs were silent offensively until the third inning when
Amanda Chandler put Union on the board off a solo homerun. Union scored again in the fourth to tie the game 2-2 after a leadoff double from
Carter Mansolino and later scored on a throwing error from West Georgia. Both teams were scoreless through the end of regulation from solid pitching from the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Wolves. With the score tied 2-2 through seven complete innings, the game was forced to extra innings. This was Union's fourth game of the season to go into extra innings. Pitching remained strong on both sides until Union struck hard in the top of the tenth inning. The international tie breaker placed
Carter Mansolino on second base. An RBI single from
Summer Cross scored Mansolino.
Amanda Chandler added another run on an RBI double.
Whitney Christian added some insurance to Union's lead on a two-run homerun to go up 6-2. West Georgia was shut out in the bottom of the tenth to give Union the win.
Brooke Thomas (3-1) earned the win.
Union struck early in the first inning in the second game of the day.
Tobie Joy scored on a sacrifice fly from
Amanda Chandler. The Lady Bulldogs added another run in the third to go up 2-0 on an RBI single from
Shelby Lamb to score
Alex Williams. West Georgia scored two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to lead 5-2. Union responded with one run in the top of the sixth on three straight singles from
Tobie Joy,
Shelby Lamb, and
Amanda Chandler. Joy scored for Union to trail just 5-3. Union was shutout in their last at bat in the seventh to fall to West Georgia 5-3.
Kelly Robey (4-4) suffered the loss. Union was led on the day by
Amanda Chandler with 4 RBI.
