JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University softball team played their first home Gulf South Conference double-header Wednesday against Christian Brothers. Union won the first game 7-5 in nine innings, then won the second game of the 5-2. The Lady Bulldogs moved to 7-5 on the season and 2-4 in Gulf South Conference play, while Christian Brothers fell to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
In the first game of the afternoon, Christian Brothers struck in the first inning with two runs. Union responded in the bottom of the second with three runs on back-to-back singles from freshmen
Summer Cross and
Amanda Chandler, followed by a 3-run home run from senior
Sam Giesler. Christian Brothers scored another run in the fifth and Union answered with a solo homerun from
Carter Mansolino in the bottom of the frame. Union scored a run in the sixth to extend their lead 5-3. Christian Brothers answered in the top of the seventh with two unearned runs to tie the game 5-5 and force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth from both teams, Union won the game in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the ninth off of a two-run homerun from freshman
Caylee Crews.
Kelly Robey (3-2) earned the win in relief.
In the second game of the double header, both teams were scoreless through three innings. Christian Brothers struck first in the top of the fourth, but Union answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single from
Summer Cross. The Lady Bucs scored one more in the fifth before Union struck hard in the bottom of the sixth. The Lady Bulldogs scored four runs, two unearned, with the help of four consecutive hits.
Alex Williams, Mansolino, Cross, and Crews posted four straight singled to go along with a walk and two errors to give Union a 5-2 lead. A scoreless seventh from Christian Brothers gave Union the win and the sweep.
Kelly Robey (4-2) earned the win with eight strikeouts on just five hits.
Up next for Union is a conference double-header at the University of West Georgia Saturday, March 9.
