JACKSON, Tenn. – With a drizzle of rain falling most of the afternoon, Union University softball earned a double-header split over the University of West Florida. West Florida took the first game 6-0, while Union won the second game 2-0. Union moved to 13-12 on the season and 8-11 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida is now 13-17 overall and 6-10 in league play.
Union rallied in the second game to salvage the split thanks to the bat of
Alex Williams and the arm of
Kelly Robey. Union pounded out 10 hits in the second game, but struggle to get runners home. The best opportunity came in the fourth inning when Union had the bases loaded with one out, but hit into an inning-ending double play. However, in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score 0-0, Union struck quick.
Amanda Chandler led off with a single, and was lifted for a pinch runner,
Keaton Kirk. Williams of Milan, Tenn. Stepped up and smashed a line drive over the left centerfield wall to give Union the 2-0 lead. Robey (7-6) tossed the complete game shutout, allowing four hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Williams, Chandler,
DeShuni Sanders, and
Summer Cross each had two hits in the game.
In the first game, Union's defense let down, in a six-run third inning for the Argos. Five of the six runs were unearned with two errors in the inning. West Florida made Union pay with nine hits in the game, including four hits in the third inning. Buckley had the big blow with a 3-run home run in the inning. No other runs were scored outside that third inning.
Brooke Thomas (5-5) took the loss, allowing six runs, one earned on six hits with a pair of strikeouts. Kirk tossed five innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits with seven strikeouts.
Up next for Union will be a home double-header versus NCAA DII No. 3 and the defending national champion Valdosta State (Ga.) Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
