Union baseball splits double-header at Harding

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SEARCY, Ark. – The Union University baseball team earned a double-header split at Harding University Tuesday afternoon. Union took the first game 15-5 and then fell 3-1 in the second game. Union goes to 7-17 on the season, while Harding is 16-11.

In the first game, Union continued their recent run of good play as they won for the fourth time in their last five games. Union jumped on top early with two runs in the first, three each in the second and third innings and six in the fourth. Harding added four in the bottom of the third inning to cut the deficit for a moment down to 8-4. Both teams added a single run in the seventh as the game ended 15-5. Union pounded out 15 hits to seven from Harding. Both teams struggled on defense, with Haring committing five errors and Union having four misplays. With all of the offense in the game, only one home run was hit, a two run shot from Union's Jim Martin in the first inning. A double from Union's Kyle Bryan and two doubles from Harding were the only other extra base hits in the game.

Cody Cunningham (1-3) earned the win, going six innings allowing six hits, four runs, two earned, with six strikeouts and three walks. Jeremey Stack tossed the final innings, allowing one unearned run on one hit. Colton Speed and Martin led Union with four RBI each. Ten different Bulldogs recorded hits, led by John Reed and Martin with three each. Reed, Bryan, and Zach Wylie each scored three runs.

The second game was played much tighter, both on the scoreboard and defensively. Only four combined runs and no errors for either team set up the pitching duel. Union scored first in the first, but Harding answered with a tally in the bottom of the frame. Harding then scored two runs in the fourth inning and used four pitchers to hold that lead and salvage the split. Stewart started for Harding, tossing three innings and giving up the one run. Copleland (1-0) earned the win as he was the pitcher of record when Harding took the lead. He tossed two innings of shutout ball allowing just one hit. Spears and Smith (6) tossed the final two innings with Smith getting the save.

Union's Benjie Fesmire (2-1) tossed a complete game in the loss, allowing 10 hits and three runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Cole McAdams and Bryan led with two hits each. McAdams recorded the team's only RBI and Speed scored the team's only run.

Up next for Union will be a conference road series at North Alabama this weekend.
