JACKSON, Tenn. – Union University softball hosted No. 18 West Alabama Saturday afternoon. The Lady Bulldogs dropped the first game to the Tigers 11-3 falling to a 12-9 record overall and 7-8 in Gulf South Conference play. The second game of the double header was postponed to Sunday afternoon due to inclement weather.
Union fell to an early deficit in the first inning when the Tigers scored two runs. The Lady Bulldogs responded with one run in the bottom of the frame when
Alex Williams hit a leadoff triple and
Tobie Joy scored her in the next at-bat on an RBI groundout to the right side for Union to trail just 2-1. West Alabama added another run in the second and Union was scoreless to make the score 3-1 though two complete innings. Union tallied another run to the score on a solo homerun from
Carter Mansolino, her sixth of the year. However, West Alabama rallied to improve their score to 5-2 in the fourth inning. Union put their final run on the board in the fifth inning on a single from
Shelby Lamb and an RBI double from
Amanda Chandler to score Lamb and shrink the lead to two runs and make the score 5-3. West Alabama offense struck hard in the top of the seventh to give them some insurance. The Tigers scored six runs on six hits to extend their lead 11-3. The Lady Bulldogs went down in order in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
Brooke Thomas (5-3) suffered the loss.
The second game of the afternoon was delayed due to rain. Union and West Alabama completed two and a third innings before deciding to postpone the game to the next day. The game will continue Sunday, March 24 at 2:00 pm with the score 1-1 in the top of the third with one out and a West Alabama runner on second base.
