NEW ALBANY, Miss. – The Union University baseball team posted their best offensive output of the season in a 19-6 win at Blue Mountain College. Union improved to 5-15 on the season, while Blue Mountain dropped to 7-19.
Union senior
John Reed was 4-for-6 with a two grand slams and eight RBI. His two grand slams set a school record for grand slams in a game and also tied the record for grand slams in a season. His eight RBI tied a school record for RBI in a game dating back to 2004 when Garrett Pepper had eight in a game versus Lambuth University.
Union scored in each of the first three innings. Union led 3-0 going into the bottom of the second when Blue Mountain cut the deficit to one with a pair of runs. Union extended their lead with three runs in the third. Union added three more in the sixth inning after Blue Mountain had cut the deficit again to 6-4. Union then added five runs each in the eighth and ninth innings. Both of Reed's grand slams, one in the eight and one in the ninth, came with two outs.
Senior pitcher
Benjie Fesmire (2-0) tossed eight innings in the win, allowing five runs on 11 hits with seven strikeouts.
Trae Bain tossed the final innings, allowing a run with two strikeouts.
In addition to Reed's big day,
Jim Martin was 2-for-5 with four RBI and a home run, moving his team-highs to three home runs and 14 RBI.
Wacey Russell hit his first home run of the season, while
Kyle Bryan had three hits in the win.
Colton Speed and
Kody Pinson had two RBI each, while McAdams pitched in with two hits also. Union pounded out 15 hits in the game and took advantage of six walks.
Up next for Union will be a home Gulf South Conference series versus West Georgia this weekend.
