JACKSON, Tenn. – Union softball played their second straight conference home series Wednesday afternoon against the Lady Statesmen of Delta State. The Lady Statesmen swept the Lady Statesmen to improve to 12-8 on the season and 7-7 in Gulf South Conference play.
The Lady Bulldogs proved their offensive abilities in the first game of the afternoon recording eight runs on ten hits. Offense was silent for both teams through two innings before Union scored four runs in the bottom of the third.
Alex Williams put the Lady Bulldogs on the board with a three-run homerun to score
Stephanie Saunders and
Sam Giesler.
Shelby Lamb added another run to the lead on a solo homerun to go up 4-0. Williams' homerun was her third of the season, Lamb's fourth, and Union's twentieth and twenty-first of the season. Delta State responded with three runs in the next inning on three hits to trail just 4-3. Union continued their hot streak into the bottom of the fourth with three runs. A leadoff double from
Summer Cross and an RBI single from Sam Gielser put Union up 5-3.
Tobie Joy added two more runs on a two RBI double to score Giesler and
Alex Williams to lead 7-3. Delta State added two unearned runs in the sixth to make the score 7-5. In the bottom of the frame, a leadoff triple from Cross and an RBI single from
Reagan Schrader put Union up 8-5. Delta State threatened in the top of the seventh with two runs and runners on first and third with two outs, but a groundout to the pitcher ended the game to give Union the win.
Brooke Thomas (5-2) earned the win recording eight strikeouts and one walk.
In the second game of the afternoon, offense was not as productive for either team. The Lady Statesmen were scoreless through six complete innings when Union scored the only run of the game in the bottom of the sixth. An RBI double from
Amanda Chandler scored
Shelby Lamb to give Union the lead 1-0. The Lady Statesmen were scoreless in the seventh to give Union the 1-0 win.
Kelly Robey (6-5) earned the win with five strikeouts and three hits.
Up next for Union is a Gulf South Conference double header against West Alabama on Saturday, March 23 at 1 and 3 pm.
