VALDOSTA, GA. – The Lady Bulldogs traveled to Valdosta, Georgia for a double header against the reigning NCAA Division II National Champions, Valdosta State. Union lost both games in the double header, falling to 5-3 on the season and 0-2 in the Gulf South Conference.
Union lost a close first game to the Lady Blazers 7-6. The Lady Bulldog offense struck early in the first inning with back-to-back doubles from
DeShuni Sanders and
Shelby Lamb.
Stephanie Saunders added a single to score Lamb to go up 2-0 in the top of the first. Union scored again in the top of the fourth on homers by
Carter Mansolino and
Alex Williams to extend their lead 5-0. Valdosta answered in a big way in the bottom of the inning. The Lady Blazers scored five runs on three hits including a three-run shot from Morgan Johnson to tie the game 5-5. Union answered back in the top of the fifth with a solo homerun from
Shelby Lamb. Valdosta responded with a leadoff homerun in the same inning to tie the game 6-6. Union was scoreless in the sixth, but back-to-back doubles by Valdosta scored the winning run for the Lady Blazers. Union was scoreless in their final at-bat making the final score 7-6.
Keaton Kirk (1-1) suffered the loss.
The second game of the double header was also a close decision with Valdosta edging Union 5-3. Offense was silent for both teams until the fourth inning when Union scored
Cheyenne Mauldin on an RBI single from
Sam Giesler. Valdosta responded with a four-run inning on back-to-back doubles and a three-run homerun to go up 4-1. The Lady Blazers scored one more run in the fifth. Union fought back in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run homerun from freshman
Amanda Chandler to trail just 5-3. The score stayed after one more at-bat from Union and Valdosta.
Kelly Robey (2-2) suffered the loss. Union outhit Valdosta on the day with 22 hits to 16.
Up next for the Lady Bulldogs is on the road in Pensacola, Florida against the University of West Florida.
