Union baseball swept at West Alabama in GSC opener

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University baseball team was swept in a 3-game series at the University of West Alabama. This series opened Gulf South Conference play for both teams. West Alabama won the first game 9-2 Saturday, then took the second game of the double-header 4-2. Sunday afternoon's game belonged to West Alabama also, 3-2. Union dropped to 3-8 on the season and 0-3 in league play. West Alabama improved to 7-11 overall and 3-0 in league play.

In the first game, Union fell behind 8-0 after the first three innings. Union managed just three hits, two from Kody Pinson. Union did not get their first hit until Pinson's single in the fifth inning. Union added single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to avoid the shutout.

Union fell behind early again in game two, going down 3-0 after the first two innings. Union added a run in the third and fifth innings, giving up one run in the fouth. Jared Davis took the loss, tossing a complete game allowing just the four runs.

In game three, Union and West Alabama were scoreless until the Tigers put up two runs in the fourth inning. Union tied the game with a run in each the fifth and sixth innings. However, West Alabama scored the winning run in bottom of the eighth inning on a solo home run from Josh Podoris.

Up next for Union will be a home non-conference game Wednesday, March 6 at 3 p.m. versus Trevecca Nazarene.
