JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team salvaged a win in the three game weekend series with a 5-2 victory over NCAA DII No. 6 University of West Florida. West Florida took the first two games of the series 10-4 and 4-1. Union improved to 4-15 on the season and 1-8 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida dropped to 20-4 overall and 6-3 in league play.
 
The win for Union snapped a 10-game losing skid dating back to a double-header sweep of NCAA DII No. 14 Southern Arkansas February 26. Union is 3-2 this season versus team ranked in the NCAA DII polls.
 
Union did most of their damage in the first inning with four runs. Starter Derek Roof (1-3) did the rest, keeping the West Florida Argos at bay for his six innings of work. Roof allowed just three hits with three strikeouts and five walks in his six innings of shutout ball. Trae Bain allowed one run in this inning of relief in the seventh. John Reed allowed one unearned run in his two innings of relief to finish the game.
 
After Roof pitched around a two-out triple in the top of the first from Barlow, Union's offense did their work in the bottom half. Colton Speed led off with a single, stole second, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Jim Martin then doubled in the first run. After a couple of walks, Zach Wylie earned and RBI with a bases loaded walk followed by a two-out, two RBI double from Benjie Fesmire.
 
Union tacked on a run in the fifth when Martin singled, stole second, then scored on a hit from Cole McAdams.
