JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University baseball team fell 8-4 to NAIA No. 22 Freed-Hardeman University Thursday night at Fesmire Field. Union dropped to 2-13 on the season, while Freed-Hardeman improved to 21-2-1 overall.
For Union, this was their eighth straight loss on the year.
The Bulldogs started well by scoring a run in the first on an RBI ground-out by
Wacey Russell, driving in
Colton Speed who led off the inning with a triple.
Union threatened again in the bottom of the second with the bases loaded and no one out. However, the FHU Lions pitched their way out of the jam. The momentum continued to shift as the Lions plated three runs in the third and two more in the fourth to go up 5-1. Two of the three runs in the third were unearned after Union committed a pair of errors.
Union rallied for two runs in the fifth to get to within 5-3. A
Kody Pinson single drove in
Wacey Russell, who also singled. On the play, a throwing error allowed
Cole McAdams to also score after he singled earlier in the inning.
The score remained 5-3 until Freed-Hardeman tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. The Lions led off with two singles, but Union quickly got two outs and had a chance to get out of the innings. However, the Lions had three straight hits, including a two RBI double from Joe Mike.
Union got a couple of singles in the bottom of the ninth, including an RBI single from Pinson to score
Wacey Russell. Russell led off the inning with a single.
Colin Hatch (0-2) for Union took the loss, allowing three runs, one earned in 2.2 innings of work.
John Reed tossed six innings of relief, allowing five runs, while
Justin Bryan came and got the last batter of the ninth to ground out.
Wood (2-0) earned the win for Freed-Hardeman, going seven innings, allowing three runs with five strikeouts. Creasy (1) earned the save, tossing the final two innings, allowing one run on three hits.
Union got 10 hits in the game, including three from Pinson and two each from Russell and McAdams. Pinson led with two RBI, while Russell had one.
Freed-Hardeman was led by Macky and Seda with three hits each. Mike led with three RBI.
Up next for Union will be a home conference 3-game series this weekend versus West Florida.
