JACKSON, Tenn. – 2/19/2013 – The Union University softball team played their season opener Tuesday afternoon at home against the Bethel University Wildcats. Union won the first game of the double-header 2-1 and then took the second game 4-2. Union improves to 2-0 on the season while Bethel drops to 0-2.
Senior pitcher
Brooke Thomas (1-0) started the first game for Union. Thomas earned her first win of the season, giving up four hits in five innings.
Keaton Kirk pitched two innings of relief with three strikeouts. Bethel scored first in the top of the fourth inning on a solo homerun from Blakely Robertson. Union responded in the same inning with an RBI from
Caylee Crews to tie that game 1-1. Union scored again in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from
Alex Williams to take the lead 2-1.
In the second matchup, Union struck first in the first inning with two runs on RBI from
Shelby Lamb and
Reagan Schrader. Union scored again in the third inning on a solo homerun from
Carter Mansolino. Union scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a sacrifice fly by
Alex Williams, scoring Schrader. Sophomore
Kelly Robey (1-0) earned the win for game two. Robey pitched seven complete innings with just five hits and nine strikeouts.
Up next for Union will be the UNA Softball Invitational on the road in Florence, Alabama.
