Union softball splits with No. 6 AUM in Friday doubleheader

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University softball team posted a doubleheader split at Auburn University in Montgomery Friday to open the three-game weekend series. Union is now 14-24 overall and 7-16 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM, ranked No. 6 in Division II, is 33-7 on the season and 16-7 in league play. 

The win over the nation's No. 6 ranked team is the highest ranked win for Union softball since the Lady Bulldogs earned an 8-5 (8 inning) win at No. 5 Valdosta State in March of 2021. 

Trailing 1-0, Union scored four unanswered runs including two in the third and two in the fifth to lead 4-1. Union scored twice on ground ball RBI, one from Courtney Marler and one from Camryn Langley. In the fifth, Union score two more, both unearned, when Marler's ground ball was misplayed by the shortstop to drive in a run. The second run also scored on the play. AUM scored a run in the fifth, but Union got two more in the sixth. An RBI single from Bella Lopez followed by a SAC bunt from marler drove in her third run of the game. AUM added a solo home run in the seventh but Union took the win 6-3. Marler was officially 0-for-3 but had four quality at-bats driving in three runs. Sydney Scott and Lopez led Union with two hits each from the eight and nine hole spots in the lineup. Riley Vaughn (5-8) tossed a complete game in the win, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with nine strikeouts and two walks. AUM outhit Union 8-6 in the game, and committed five errors to just one for Union. Three of Union's six runs were earned, while two of AUM's three runs were earned. 

Game was was also a very close game with AUM scoring twice in the first. Neither team scored again the rest of the game. AUM outhit Union 6-4 with Union committing two errors to just one for AUM. Union got four hits from four different players. Rylee Moore (3-10) took the hard luck loos, tossing all six innings allowing two runs on six hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
