MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Union University has won four consecutive GSC baseball series after defeating Montevallo 15-10 and 12-8 in a road doubleheader Saturday.
Despite falling 5-1 on Friday in the series opener, the Bulldogs have won nine of their last 12 conference contests against West Alabama, Alabama Huntsville, Auburn Montgomery, and the Falcons.
Union (20-26, 14-15 GSC) has eclipsed the 20-win mark for the first time since 2017, when the Bulldogs finished 33-20. Meanwhile, head coach
Casey McGehee tallied career victories 50 and 51 with Saturday's wins.
Montevallo's Adiel Melendez stifled the Union offense in the Falcons' lone win, allowing seven hits – all singles – and one run across 7.2 frames. Union fell behind 3-1 after an inning and never presented much of a threat to the hosts for the contest's remainder.
The bats stayed anemic late into Saturday's front end until the Bulldogs stunned the Falcons, who entered the eighth leading 7-2, with 13 runs between the final two innings. Union collected five extra-base hits among the team's 12 total knocks, including a double and a home run by
Grant Ross and another longball by
Carson Chavies.
Union capitalized on 10 walks – including a half-dozen straight in the fifth inning – to pounce for 12 runs in the seven-inning rubber match and set a season-high in free passes.
Union will complete the GSC campaign at home next weekend against Christian Brothers (15-28, 5-25) with a Friday (6:00 p.m.) single game and Saturday (1:00 p.m.) doubleheader. Arkansas Tech will come to town on Tuesday for Union's final midweek game. First pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
