VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-14) Friday night at Valdosta State University. Union dropped to 4-16 overall and 2-11 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State improved to 10-12 on the season and 9-4 in league play.
The two teams were both playing well entering the match, with Union having won two of its past three matches and VSU winning five of its last six outings.
Valdosta State controlled this match from the start, jumping out to a 7-2 lead. Union rallied back, but was not able to lead again in set one.
In set two, Union led early, 5-2, in a close set. The teams then went back and forth until Union led for the final time at 12-11. The set was tied 15-15 before VSU closed out with 10 of the final 15 points to win the set.
VSU led for the entire way in the third and final set to seal the match.
Union and VSU were equal with seven blocks each, but VSU led in all other stat categories, including kills (47-32), aces (5-2), assists (43-28, and digs (59-47). VSU also outhit Union .310 to .144.
The reigning GSC player of the week led Union with 12 kills.
Natalie Supine and
Carleigh Charles had one ace each, Ajahnaea led with five blocks,
Kylie Creech with 14 assists, while
Sarah-Kate Savage and
Emily Priddy added 11 and 10 digs respectively.
Union will face the GSC's top team and the No. 16-ranked team in NCAA D2, West Florida. The game will be in Pensacola, Florida, Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
