Union volleyball gets second straight victory in 3-2 win over Mississippi College

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team defeated Mississippi College 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 25-21, 19-25, 16-24) Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium. Union improved 4-14 overall and 2-9 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 8-13 on the season and 5-6 in league play. 

The win for Union was its second straight, both coming in five sets. It also snapped a 3-game skid against MC. Marie Torosian led Union with a double-double, getting 10 kills and 16 digs. 

The first set was back and forth with neither team leading by more than three points. Union had a pair of 3-point leads at 7-4 and 11-8. However, with the score knotted at 22-22 and again 24-24, MC scored four of the final six points to take the early lead. 

In set two, after MC scored the first point, Union rattled off six straight and never trailed again in the set. MC tied the set at eight apiece, but again Union went on a run to lead 18-10. Union took the set with its largest lead at 25-16. 

Union continued its momentum and led most of the third set. Following a 7-1 run, Union led 16-9. MC got as close as two points late, but Union scored the final two points to win 25-21. 

The fourth set was another back-and-forth battle with neither team able to pull away. With MC leading 18-17 late, the Choctaws proved their fight by staying alive, closing out the fourth set with a 7-2 run to force a fifth set. 

In set five, MC led early and took an 8-6 lead at the court swap. Union took over from there with a 5-1 run to lead 11-9 and did not trail again. MC survived at match point 14-13 Union lead to tie the match. However, Union scored the final two points to win 16-14. 

Union dominated the aces category with 13 to just six from MC. MC led in kills (47-43), blocks (10-8), and assists (45-38). Union led in digs, 80-77. 

Torosian and Elizabeth Gilbert led with 10 kills each, while Parker Goff added nine. Goff led with five aces, while Natalie Supine, Gilbert, and Ajahnaea Williams led with four blocks each. Kylie Creech led with 25 assists, and Sarah-Kate Savage led with 19 digs. Torosian completed her double-double with 16 digs. 

Up next for Union will be the third of a 3-game home swing Tuesday, October 21 at 5 p.m. versus Lee University. This game will be part of Union's Homecoming Week.. Events included Bulldog Madness (Monday), volleyball (Tuesday), soccer (Friday and Sunday), and Basketball (Saturday).
